No Sew Ollie the Octopus

Updated: Sep 14, 2023

This crochet pattern is to make this adorable octopus. This is a super easy, no sew pattern that is quick to work up. Perfect for last minute gifts and market prep. It's curly little tentacles are so fun to create. I adore the spiral created by the tentacles, it's such a nice effect.

Yarn

You can use any yarn you have lying around for this pattern. I love making it with chunky and plush yarns but can also be made with thinner yarns to create adorable little key chains.

All the octopus pictured here have been made with Hobbii's Baby snuggle yarn. I love the incredibly soft feel of it and I find it so easy to work with.

Other Materials

  • Crochet hook, size appropriate to chosen yarn (I would recommend one or two sizes smaller than the recommended size on yarn label)

  • Yarn needle

  • Poly fill

  • Stitch markers (I never work without these and place one in the last stitch of each round)

  • Safety eyes (choose a size that suits your yarn and project)

*Please note that safety eyes are NOT recommended for children under the age of 3 years.

  • SC: Single crochet

  • Inc: Increase (Stitch 2 SC into the stitch)

Pattern

Starting from the bottom and working up

R1: 6SC in a MR R2: Inc x 6 (12) R3: (SC, inc) x 6 (18) R4: (2SC, inc) x 6 (24) R5: (3SC, inc) x 6 (30)

R6 - 10: 30SC

R11: (3SC, Dec) x 6 (24)

(before proceeding with this round place a stitch marker in the back loop of the first stitch, I find this makes it easier to keep track of everything and find it when I come back around)

R12: FLO (SC, Ch 7, second chain from the hook 2HDC, 2HDC in the next 5 Ch stitches, Sl St into next stitch on the body, SC) x 8

R13: BLO (in the back look left unused from the last round) (2SC, Dec) x 6 (18)

Place safety eyes between rows 8 and 9 about 7 stitches apart (check placement based on position of tentacles, I like to have them sitting right above a tentacle each with one tentacle between.

Stuff with poly fill

R18: (SC, Dec) x 6 (12)

R19: Dec x 6

Close and cut the yarn, leaving a tail for sewing. Sew the hole closed.
